The Idea Takes Shape
In 2011, Frank S. Jorga had a visionary idea: online transactions needed to be fundamentally reimagined. He envisioned a world where people would no longer need to physically verify their identity for crucial online transactions, such as opening a bank account. Instead, this process should be conveniently and legally conducted via a video call.
Founding of WebID
After extensive research and numerous in-depth discussions, this visionary idea led to the creation of WebID Solutions GmbH. Frank S. Jorga co-founded the company in 2012 alongside two other partners. With his brother, Sven Jorga – who remains WebIDs CTO – technological expertise was firmly established in-house.
Official Approval of the WebID Video Identification Process
At the beginning of 2014, WebID received official approval for its efficient alternative to the post-ident process. This WebID innovation set new industry standards and prompted the release of key BaFin circulars. Shortly thereafter, on April 8, 2014, the first bank introduced WebIDs video identification process. Many leading financial service providers followed, leading to numerous trusted partnerships that continue to thrive today.
Expanding into the International Market
With the opening of the high-security Video Ident Center in Solingen and another location in Hamburg, WebID began its international expansion in 2015. In addition to establishing branches in Austria and Switzerland within the DACH region, WebID took a bold step into the Indian market to explore new opportunities.
Introduction of the Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)
Since 2016, WebID customers have been able to sign legally binding contracts online, such as loan agreements or insurance policies, thanks to its Qualified Electronic Signature solution. Additionally, WebID opened a location in Kiel, offering customized development and IT services. These services primarily benefit companies in the banking sector, allowing them to leverage WebIDs tailored solutions and consulting expertise.
Fully Automated Identification Process
In 2017, WebID introduced a fully automated identification process based on technology that was initially developed in 2012/13 and partially patented. This advancement enhanced both the security and user experience of video identification procedures, significantly improving process efficiency.
Entry into the U.S. Market
With the opening of its first two offices in the United States – San Mateo and New York – WebID successfully entered the American market. The company’s expertise and fully automated identification products, renowned for their high-security standards, quickly attracted the attention of Fortune 500 companies.
Another Innovation: Biometrics
WebID revolutionized the identification market once again with AutoID, its AI-powered biometric facial recognition technology. This cutting-edge solution enables AI-driven ID document verification around the clock and worldwide.
Age Verification and Reference Transfer
The Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM) highly rated AvsID, WebIDs online age verification process, as one of the best available. Additionally, WebID introduced AccountID, an innovative solution that simplifies online identification through reference transactions via online banking – making the process faster and more convenient.
WebID Secures Investment from AnaCap
With the appointment of Daniel Kreis as Co-CEO and the investment from UK-based firm AnaCap, WebID strengthened its commitment to ambitious growth and internationalization strategies. At the same time, the company expanded its product portfolio and consulting services to meet the demands of relevant international target markets.
A Vision with a Mission
Ten years after its founding, WebID continued to expand its portfolio of (SaaS) online identification solutions. In 2022, the company hosted the first-ever ID X Summit – a dedicated event on digital identities, fostering exchange among industry experts and stakeholders. That same year, WebID launched the WebID Wallet, its first app for end users, marking the company’s entry into the B2C market.
Reusable Digital Identities
With TrueID, WebID introduced an identification solution that allows users to reuse their verified digital identity. By now, 17 million people have entrusted WebID with their securely stored data on German high-security servers for future identification processes. In addition, since 2023, the city of Wiesbaden has leveraged WebIDs GwG-/AML-compliant, fully automated eID solution to offer citizens digital administrative services, such as marriage registration and address change notifications.
Entering New Markets
WebID continues its expansion trajectory and, thanks to its proven consulting expertise, has secured its first Fortune 500 client in the U.S. In addition to this milestone, WebID is also expanding its B2C offerings with new solutions for consumers, including the ability to apply for a mini loan conveniently through the WebID Wallet.
